I changed one thing in my view and Vaadin crashed. I changed it back, but now it won’t start at all. This is the same problem described on Stackoverflow. None of the solutions have worked for me.
I tried maven clean, install.

Ack, ok, I had to run Invalidate Caches in Intellij.
Wow, this has happened twice today. Is it because I’m using the pre-release?
That’s weird, and especially having the issue fixed by clearing IDEA indexes seems like to me an IDE problem.
Does the same error happen if you start the application from the command line?
Please, also post the full stacktrace.
I only start it from the command line.

I cannot reproduce the issue with a simple project created with start.vaadin.com.
Do you have any particular configuration in application.properties or custom session request handlers? Could you please share an example project that reproduces the issue?

This is still happening to me every day. It is not consistent. Usually I just have close it and come back to it later in the day. Frustrating.
What is this handler and how/why could it be null?
Try to put a breakpoint in VaadinSession.addRequestHandler() and check who is calling it and if it is calling with a null argument.

Finally got to reproduce. The problem seems to be the BeaconHandler class from Collaboration Engine.
Basically, when Spring dev tools restart the application upon a compilation, the Vaadin session gets serialized on stop and deserialized on restart.
However, for historical reasons, the BeaconHandler defines a serialization hook that replaces the instance with null.
In the collaboration engine, there’s then a component that restores it.
As a workaround, I suggest you to exclude the collaboration engine from the pom file.
BTW, removing the JSESSIONID cookie or opening the page in an incognito window should prevent the issue, since a new HTTP session would be created
Most likely with CE, UI serialization must be turned on in dev mode, by setting vaadin.devmode.sessionSerialization.enabled=true in application.properties
