Is it possible to create an emaillabel that receives a list of emails?

Having trouble getting an EmailField to play nicely with a binder. When I bind an EmailField, the error message no longer displays. I suspect this means the binder's error display is taking precedence. Is this the expected behavior?

EmailField tfEmail = new EmailField("Email");
tfEmail.setErrorMessage("Please enter a valid email address");
Binder<CustomUser> binder = new Binder<>(CustomUser.class);
//If the line below is commented out, the error message displays
// properly. Otherwise it does not display at all
binder.forField(tfEmail)
.bind(CustomUser::getEmail, CustomUser::setEmail);

The field only displays the error message, when the state of the field is invalid. You can set this state yourself using emailField.setInvalid(true) or you can add validators to the binder like this:

binder.forField(emailField).withValidator(
    new EmailValidator(getTranslation("validation.email.invalid"), true))
