Vaadin with embedded DB

Hello!

I am developing a vaadin application in eclipse using embedded Java DB as a database.

While programming, I often update the application in Tomcat and get errors like this:

java.sql.SQLException: Another instance of Derby may have already booted the database F:\bin\eclipse-vaadin\myapp.

The reason is obvious: The database engine is not stopped properly, when the web application is being stopped.

Now, I close the hibernate session and shutdown the database in TPTApplication.close method. It doesn’t work (see error above).

So my question is - where is the correct place to

a) start the persistence layer (database and hibernate) and
b) shut it down

?

I would recommend to use a ServletContextListener for proper startup/shutdown of embedded databases in a web-app-environment:

Hi Dmitri,

closing the database in applications’s close method could be not the best way as you may have multiple applications users (and the fore application class instances).

I’d recommend that you will initialize the derby and hibernate in the ServletContextListener, then make some kind of a singleton pattern to get hibernate session from any part of your app.

And in the same ServletContextListener, add the shutdown code for derby and hibernate. So your derby will be started once you deploy your app and will be stopped on app shutdown and also the same derby instance will be shared across all your app instances.

In your contextDestroyed(ServletContextEvent) method, in order to shutdown the database cleanly, you will likely need to get a connection to the database. In Hibernate, this can be tricky. After searching for a while, I found the following code snippet

connection = cnf.buildSettings().getConnectionProvider().getConnection();

(cnf is the hibernate configuration).

Hello!

Thanks all for the help!

Now I close the Hibernate session and shutdown the database in a ServletContextListener.

However, now I experience another problem - during or before shutdown I get the exception that my persistence object is not serializable.

I have the impression that Tomcat wants to save the state of my application in a file and therefore tries to serialize the persistence object. Marking it transient does not help.

The stack trace can be found below.

How can I fix this error?

Tomcat by default serializes sessions when exiting. For instructions on how to disable this feature, see e.g.
here

The alternative at the bottom is a bit shorter than the first option proposed there.

When using Eclipse, you need to change Eclipse’s own version of the configuration file, which is found in the Servers folder in your explorer.
