Space Applications Services is a independent Belgian space technology company, founded in 1987, whose aim is to develop innovative systems, solutions and products for the aerospace markets as well as related industries.
The company designs and develops spacecraft control centres. The company also operates International Space Station (ISS) payloads from control centres (User Support and Operations Centres – USOCs) in Belgium and The Netherlands. The USOCs are responsible for the control and operation of several scientific payloads on-board the ISS. As part of the ground control facilities for the future ISS experiment ACES (Atomic clock ensemble in space), a web-based user interface has been developed to provide access for operators located in the control centre as well as for remote access for scientists and payload developers.
The GUI supports all required functions ranging from planning, real-time monitoring & control, quicklook displays for science data, user administration to data dissemination.
A particularly demanding requirement to integrate with legacy applications made the use of a server-side web development framework almost a necessity and thus Vaadin a logical choice. The architecture of Vaadin allows for a seamless transition of user interface functionality between server and client depending on the usability and performance needs. This capability proved to be very powerful when designing this real-time monitoring application.
