EMP - Editorial Multi Platform

Canada Entertainment

Quebecor Media Inc. is a subsidiary of Quebecor Inc. (TSX:QBR.A) (TSX:QBR.B), one of Canada's most important holding companies operating in the telecommunications and media businesses. Sun Media Corporation, a subsidiary of Quebecor Media Inc., is Canada's largest newspaper publisher, based on the circulation of paid and free newspapers, publishing over 15.1 million copies each week.

The EMP (Editorial Multi Platform) application is an online tool for handling news across several news portals in Canada. Editors of Quebecor Media group use the tool to create and manage news and material related to the news in a controlled way that is then distributed to different formfactors, WCMs and portals for publishing. EMP also comes with a photo manipulation tool for managing images so that they fit the format of different portals, automatically showing different formats that the editor edits. The application as a whole saves lots of time from editors, that previously had to open several WCMs and CMSs and copy-paste articles over and over. Now publishing across sites is managed in seconds.

EMP is built on top of Liferay with some 25 portlets in total, some made with JQuery and others in Vaadin. The application itself is leveraging Spring underneath the hood and MongoDB for persistency. ActiveMQ is used for managing messages between WCMs.

Vaadin was chosen as the tool of trade 3 years ago when looking for alternatives to the previous Flex+Java solutions, mainly building on the same competence as previously. With Vaadin one guy could do everything from the beginning to the end, in Java from backend to UI.

"Being able to write plain Java code to build front-ends provided the possibility for each of our developer to build every use cases from start to finish. No need to wait for the front-end code."
- Michel Auger, Main Solutions Architect for editorial products. -

"Vaadin enabled us to develop the UI much faster than anticipated. The framework is well-documented and has a lot of available widgets from GWT and the community. Also, its compatibility with Spring makes it easier to use with our existing stack. We really appreciate that the framework is evolving quickly with the most recent technologies, for example Atmosphere. The fact that we can use Selenium to test our web pages is the cherry on top of it !"
