Vaadin releases Vaadin Framework 8

Turku, Finland, February 21, 2017 – Vaadin, the company behind the popular open source web application development tools, today released version 8.0 of the Java web UI framework, Vaadin Framework. The 8-series further simplifies the development of business applications by making Java developers even more productive due to significant enhancements in developer experience.

Vaadin Framework is used by over 150 000 developers around the world, for creating business critical applications that require a snappy user experience, work across devices and deliver a coherent and good look ‘n' feel. It is used heavily in healthcare, finance and retail and include customers such as Puma, CGI Healthcare and Deutsche Bank.

The biggest enhancement in Vaadin Framework 8 is its re-written data binding API that utilizes improvements in recent Java versions, such as type parameters and lambda expressions. It is also much lighter on the CPU and more efficient at using memory. The new API makes it more efficient for existing users, but also much easier for the new users getting started with using Vaadin, with a minimal amount of boilerplate code.

"We strongly believe that optimizing developer experience is the key in helping development teams focus on building web applications that will get the users excited. The whole team is thrilled to see what are the next generation web applications our customers will be building with the new Vaadin Framework 8." says CEO Joonas Lehtinen.

Many community members have already laid their hands on the latest version during its almost half year long beta period and helped form it on the way. Many of the 600+ add-ons in the Vaadin Directory add-on listing have also already started migration to the latest version.

For existing users, however, migrating from Vaadin 7 to Vaadin 8 is hassle-free, by the use of a separate migration package.

"Unlike most web frameworks on the market, we highly value backwards compatibility our customers can rely on. They often build systems with very long lifespans and would not be able to afford rewriting them every few years. With over 14 years of proven migration path, Vaadin Framework has been bringing new technologies to our users every year without forcing them to rewrite, and will continue to do so in the future." Joonas Lehtinen continues.

The latest version is available as a free download from vaadin.com/framework and there is a global roadshow for Vaadin 8 in cities around the world. For the most convenient location, see vaadin.com/vaadin-8-roadshow
