Oracle ending public updates for Java SE 6 soon

This is from Oracle’s Java magazine, page 12, it says “The last publicly available release of JDK 6 is to be released in February 2013. After February 19, all new security updates, patches, and fixes for Java SE 6 and Java SE 5 will be available only through My Oracle Support and will thus require a commercial license with Oracle.”

Is Vaadin ready to switch to Java 7, which as they point out as been out for more than a year?

This is the first I’ve heard of needing a commercial Java license to get patches to an older version.

Both Vaadin 6 as well as Vaadin 7 should be working fine with Java 7.

Just to note that this is nothing new for Java SEs at Oracle, and if I remember correctly, already Sun started doing this with Java 1.4. See e.g.
this page
- you can get extended support even for Java 1.4 until February 2013 for a fee.
