Has anyone ever done a comparison test between the two cache options?
What are the pros and cons of both?

At first glance, they serve two completely different purposes. 2nd level caching caches Java objects between requests, so that different entity managers don’t re-fetch objects that are in the (global) cache. A caching entity provider appears to be entirely local to that container. So it could be that nobody compared them because they are not comparable…
